I remember another ad in the R&T classifieds for that period that listed a
Birdcage Maserati, a complete Birdcage roller chassis and tons for extra
parts all for something like $800.

I also remember my first job, the summer after I graduated from high school
in '65, paid $1.25/hour, so even if I'd saved everything (even pre-tax) I
made that summer I still would have probably had less than half the $800.
One interesting side benefit of the place I worked was that it was located
next door to Overseas Motors, the local BMC dealer and one of the BMC to
North America importers, IIRC. I occasionally went over and talked a
salesman into a "test" of a Spidget  and sometimes even an A-H 3000. Now
that I think about it, maybe that's were the roadster bug first bit.
