Paint wear, actually paint eradication, was why we returned the loaner hard
top we had on our '70 2K and had the dealer out the soft top back on. I
don't remember why we took off the hard top (Gee it was ONLY 33 years
ago!!), but when we did sand and crud under the gasket along the bottom back
edge of the hard top had worn all the way through the paint and had a pretty
good groove ground into the metal itself.

Don't remember if the hard tops attach with bolts or not (remember those 33
years?!), but maybe it wasn't adjusted properly. In any case Earl Hughes
repaired the paint and put a new soft top on. Unfortunately the paint wasn't
really cured so the "weave" pattern from the top was pressed in to the
paint.

I'd expect you'd need to periodically replace this plastic "skin" but that
would seem preferable, not to mention much easier, to periodic body and
paint repair of the rear deck area.
