No, the large red wire from the GM alternator plug-in is connected to the
the alt output stud. The white wire is clipped or taped off;

Is the sense wire (white one I think) from the plastic connector connected
to the positive pole of the alternator and the other wire left unconnected?
Aside from that, the internal voltage regulator is probably bad.  I ended up
with one that went bad after 1 day of installation,  I exchanged it for
another under warranty and had no problems since.

    I have a feeling my charging system is not working correctly.   I have a
  brand new battery, fairly new gear reduction starter and a new
alternator.
