I'll put this out there and let the rest of the list take shots at it.
I've never seen written direction on re-assembly of the front hubs that I
can recall. What I have done is to tighten the spindle (castle) nut until
there is no play between the spindle and the hub If you grask the tire by
the OD, you'll see movement if there is any. After getting it to the point
of no movement, I back the spindle nut off just enough to get the cotter pin
into one of the slots. Between the two holes in the spindle, and the number
of slots in the spindle nut, you'll only need to back it off a bit. You
still should see any play. Then drive the car a bit and re-check. If you
have installed new bearings, it may take a bit of driving to get them seated
completely. (In my mind "bit" = a mile or so.)
You want the spindle nut just tight enough so there is no play. It doesn't
need to be any tighter.
Anybody else? Bubba, how do you do it?
Now, I can tell you what happens if you get too much grease in the front
hubs: You wind up spending part of a Sunday morning in a Holiday Inn
parking lot in Phoenix on your way from LA to Houston dismantling the hubs,
taking out some grease, and trying to clean the grease which blew past the
seals off the brake pads. (In 1973, everything in Phoenix was closed on
Sunday mornings.)
