Ahoy Roadster fans and transmission experts,

Long time no see, but it's finally time to get my 68-2000 back on the road in
time for Shasta 2010! (Is it still the weekend after 4th of July?)

I'm going back together with my 5spd transmission after suffering the 5th gear
neutral problem and I'm looking for some pointers from transmission experts
and those that have done it before.

I had the 5th gear welded at a machine shop and they did a competent job. The
weld bead is just *slightly* higher than the surface of the gear, I've
considered filing this down but don't want to diminish the strength of the
weld. We're talking 1/32 or at most 1/16 of an inch higher.

My question:

When the manual calls for 250-ft-lbs or torque for the main shaft nut, are
they talking about the larger nut which goes against the ball-locked-spacer,
or are they talking about the locknut (I think they call it "locking plate")?

If I tighten the thicker nut too much (even just hand tight), the 5th gear has
trouble rolling on it's roller bearings. The manual says "do not tighten" in
regards to the larger nut, so is this a matter of adjusting it against the
spacer so that 5th gear can still move on it's roller bearings and then using
250-ft-lbs on the locknut?

And should I spot weld those two nuts to one another? Anyone ever tried to
take welded nuts apart later??? Hacksaw?

Parts vendors be on alert, I'll be looking for timing chains, valves, cam
tower shims, head gasket, intake-exhaust gasket, 5spd tranny seals, and I'm
sure a lot more in the coming 2 weeks.

Thanks,

Ken Pearce
