I wouldn't bother drilling any holes.
I am in the same situation, the holes were filled when the boot lid lip 
was repaired.
Since the mounting screws thread into the trim piece I intend to bond 
the handle to the lid lip using polyurethane adhesive.
You can usually see the 1/2 circle cutouts for the screw holes on the 
inside of the boot lid.
Mount it with the lock cutout symmetrical with the boot lock and it will 
look dandy.
It doesn't do much work after all.
