Hi Susan,

In a message dated 98-02-18 17:12:27 EST, you write:

<< I am trying to find out what the best wheel bearings are for race
applications, and who to get them from. A Triumph friend here says to
go to one of the bearing companies here and show them mine, and ask for
race applications of the same thing. Is this okay, or should I order
them from a specific company? I will autocross and road race the car
this year, so it will have tight cornering, stopping and starting, as
 well as higher speed applications.>>

Do you have spitfire or GT6 hubs? Actually, I've used both with bearings off
the shelf from your standard parts house (i.e., Pep Boys) without any
problems. If you want to spend extra money, go with a high quality brand like
Timken. Just find an industrial bearing store in your area and give them the
number off of the old bearing race or take it in for comparison.

<<Also -- what is the best way to determine endfloat? My three brands of
manuals all give different ways to adjust the wheel bearings with the
hub nut, and they all say, "with endfloat of..." but not how to measure
it. Do I just use a feeler gauge between the nut and hub?>>

I run them a little looser than what you would normally run a street car.
Reason being that the bearings get a little hotter at the track and will
expand more. What I do is tighten them up to seat everything and then back
the nut off until you can just move the backing washer with a screwdriver
without levering it against the hub. This does result in a little sloppiness
when the wheel is back on and you wiggle it.

 <<Thanks in advance!

 Keep Triumphing,
 Susan Hensley :)
