Did you by any chance get one or more of the aux. venturis in upside
down when you replaced the chokes?  If one cylinder is getting fuel in
the idle and progression stages, but not from the main jet, that can result
in a great idle, willing revs when no load, and a major loss of power and
driveability in the upper rev ranges.

In general, going to smaller chokes, allowing less ir into the engine would
indicate going to smaller mains, not larger.  What was the reasoning here?
