There were 9-10 Old Yellers. This is #1 that Dick Morgensen originally
built. The rest came out of Max Balchowsky's garage. I've done stories on
this one and on Ernie Nagamatsu's #3 car (which he has taken to the Goodwood
Revival the past couple of years). Not all are still in existence (#2 is
gone, I believe). #1 is actually a restoration by Larkin up from what was
little more than the tubeframe after it was decisively crashed a few decades
ago, with bodywork recreated from photos of the original car, etc (not an
uncommon practice, I understand). There is some contention over whether it
is really an Old Yeller, or a copy -- but the frame (or salvageable pieces
of it, at least) and a few other bits came out of the original. A lot is
recreated, but done so from original information as much as was possible.
But heck, there is even dissent over how to use the name. I use Old Yeller
because that is what Balchowsky used in serious moments, and because it was
the title of the Disney movie from which Max took the name. But some use Ol'
Yellar or Ol' Yaller because that's how Balchowsky sounded when he affected
a country hick accent.
