With this recent discussion of gear oil and shock oils, it is important to
point out that (if I'm not mistaken) there are completely different
standards for reporting gear oil and engine oil weights.  On engine oil, the

upper number is based on the viscosity at 212 degrees F.  Maybe someone can
clarify this, but I believe gear oil goes by a completely different
standard. and I have no idea about hydraulic shock oil. So if you think 90
wt gear oil is heavier than 40 weight engine oil, you may be wrong.  The
information is probably out there someplace.
