Most of the older spark plus could be disassembled to clean. They all
suffered from the same problem--they worked fine when spark coils put out
about 10,000 volts, but when they started hitting 20K or so, they leaked all
over the place. So did the old 5mm wire. My 67 Maserati has dual plug heads
and a bunch of 5MM wire running through metal tubes the give it a nice
orderly look. When you put a scope on any lead you can see all six cylinders
firing. The other sparks are just a little lower amplitude--but not much!

The other day I found my old Bell full coverage helmet--I bought one when
they first came out. Hard to believe we wore those things on motorcycles.
Like looking out through a tank periscope.

Kas: I still have my fathers Cromwell helmet and goggles sitting on my
bookcase next to this computer. A treasured family heirloom to me. Thanks -

You could disassemble them with a couple wrenches. Easy to clean. I used
them for a while, then one night I opened the hood with engine running and
it looked like the Aurora Borealis under hood. End of Lodge plugs.

Good for one thing though, you take them apart, throw away the innards, then
weld an air fitting to the shell and then you have a tool to screw into a
combustion chamber, attach to the air compressor and you can change the
valves springs without taking off the head. The air pressure holding the
valves closed. Lots better than using a piece of rope to pack up the area of
the combustion chamber as you did that job. My first helmet was one of those
Cromwell cork specials. Heavy as the devil. As I remember it was $100 for a
complete Hepolite kit of four pistons and sleeves 87mm.

Hello:

A friend of mine loaned me an interesting document - the 1957 British Auto
Parts catalog complete with all sorts of parts and accessories... and
prices.
Did you know that Lodge had a platinum tip spark plug back then? Yup, sold
for $3.55 each. For the safety minded race driver, you could buy the
"famous"
Seagraves crash helmet, "the latest word in construction, comfort, style and
appearance. Covered with white leather, magnificently finished throughout.
Price....$$27.50." Or how about a new tonneau cover for $31.95; convertible
tops for $42.95; or maybe you need some new John Bull fan belts or rubber
hoses; Vandervell bearings for $6.85; Hepolite pistons for your TR at $10.00
each. Oh those were the days.

Gary
