On a TR race engine, if you are going to use synthetic oil, you initially run 
the engine with mineral oil to seat the rings.  Therefore, using synthetic 
oil in a worn engine would probably be worse, unless it loosens carbon which 
causes rings to stick.  You might also try some Marvel's Mystery Oil in the gas 
tank.

If she is running the engine out of oil, it is either ready for a rebuild or 
the trash yard.
