I have worked on cars for over 32 years. Once an engine is worn to the
point that it burns large quantities of oil, there is very little you can do
short of rebuild the engine. Using a thicker oil can slow down the
consumption, whether it is natural or synthetic, there are additives that
will thicken oil that the manufacture uses like in the high mileage engine
oils, and there are additives sold at parts stores that "restore" the engine
with just a pint of the miracle liquid. These are all just stop gap
measures. That is except for the miracle pints of money wasters. You can not
replace worn away metal with a liquid from a can. Some additives actually
soften seals so they will temporarily re-seal valves stems and crank seals.
Do not expect this to last. I would first determine where the oil is going,
rings or valve guides. An easy way is to spray gum-out carb cleaner in the
oil fill hole while the car is idling. If the rpm changes drastically, it
has worn guides or just bad valve stem seals. These can be replaced without
pulling the head on most cars. If the rpm doesn't change much, you have bad
rings. Nothing can be done but replace with new pistons and rings. So, you
may as well give her a case of good 20w50 Castrol oil and tell her if she
kills the engine, she is riding the bus until she can afford to fix the car
or replace it. Barry
