They get weak and won't crank the engine. Probably a heat shield is a good
idea. I had one on for a while but got irritated with it being in the way. 

Does anyone have the URL for Ted's website? Couldn't find it on Google

I've got 6 seasons on mine, and I use it (typically) 10-12 times per event
day, more if I have a co-driver.

But I'm an autocrosser, you're a road racer. The (significant) difference in
the two is that our cars don't get as hot for as long and we have a lot less
vibration (less time a full throttle).

If you don't have a heat shield, that might be a good thing to do...
there's not much you can do it the prob is vibration.

How exactly do the starters fail?
