My teammate Mike Stobbe and I spend years developing our TR3 carb air feed.
After many FOD problems from running tracks like Riverside, Willow, and
Laguna; we knew that a filter was essential.
We quickly learned that standard like filters cost many BHP.
Full radiator ducting also cost speed from the lack of cold air to the carbs.
Many people feel that a closed end air box is not a good idea, so our MKI
design had a filter
well ahead of the carbs; this helped and we ran that way for some time.
One Porsche helped back slide off Riverside did enough damage to the valve
seats, that we researched a closed ended system with a K&N V12 E Type filter
next to the water radiator,
with duct tape as a flex joint.
The first session with the newer setup was done without fitting the vents to
the float chambers to the inside of the box due to a time crunch known as the
National season.
All was well till I lifted at the end of the straight and then tried to
downshift; I had to
greatly depress the pedal to get any revs.
We had the brake pipe to finish the vents for the next session, and picked up
quite a few revs on the longer straights.
The one time we had to race in the volcanic ash at Portland, I put a second
filter
behind the primary one. We had only one pre race session because of the ash,
and I gradually increased the revs on my newly rebuilt motor. Alas, the race
showed
that the top end was gone with the filter closer to the carbs. We finished
2nd, but with
no damage to the motor.
Mike is a wonder to watch when he turns sheet metal into trick things!

Would be interested in knowing if an air box will work or does it cause
