Simply enough it was what I had, and in a sense also its lack of
reliability.

In 1965 I decided I needed a sports car. I looked at a Midget, but the
steering was way loose (and the MG dealer said that was normal in sports
cars!). Then I went to the Triumph dealer and he had a Spitfire on the lot
for $1300. Steering wasn't loose. I bought it. Still have it.

It was my daily driver for 5 years, and my autocrosser. It also managed to
break down every October just when the Divisional Championship came around.
Finally got tired of that, gave it to my brother (who was by then working as
a mechanic at the shop where I bought it) and he built it into a race car.
Took it back 3 years later. Although race cars do break, it has proven a lot
more reliable in race trim.

Of course, I quickly came to love the Spitfire's ease of access for working
on it. And these days, the relatively easy availability of parts &
expertise. There's a reason I've owned this car for 44 years now.
