think the 1.6 litre car would be a  wider ratio and non-syncro 1st.

Right, Alan! The 2L (all-synchro) Vitesse/GT6 gearbox has a 2.65:1 1st  
gear, compared to 2.93:1 on the older, non-synchro-first Vitesse 1600/Sports 6  
box. Other forward ratios are the same And, of course, boxes can't be  
swapped directly between Spitfire and GT6, since the input shaft is a larger  
diameter on the GT6 (amongst other detail differences).
