Had a problem with a tie rod end spinning while taking it apart and
while tightening it. This note is to document a solution for the group
and archives.

The threads on the tie rod shafts are 7/16 x 20 SAE and fitted with
castellated nuts with a cotter pin. Finding that one never had the
cotter pin installed (restoration 10 years ago), tightening it became a
problem with the shaft spinning before grasping the tapered hole.

The solution was to compress the ball joint with a 4 inch C clamp,
pressing the top of the joint and the bottom of the shaft. This froze
the joint and kept the shaft from spinning while the nut was tightened
enough so that the shaft would grasp the tapered hole.

The alternative was to use a nut breaker with the chance of destroying
the threads, I was pleased to avoid this effort.

Thanks to David Nock for his generous donation of remote advice on this
effort.

Best Regards,
