Scott,

Suggest leaving the mashed bushing in place and reaming it out (if you 
haven't already removed it). The bushing should be tight in the flywheel 
and the transmisson shaft should have enough clearance to spin freely in 
the bushing. Not too sloppy.

You need to rent a transmission jack. The jack allows vertical, 
horizontal and angular adjustments and would make your job a lot easier. 
You should also screw a pair of alignment studs into the rear engine 
flange to guide the assembly into place. Studs need to be long enough to 
permit their removal. I cut a slot in the studs I used so I could back 
them out with a screwdriver.
