Ron,
I tried just about everything I could think of to force a wire down to
that screen. Even drilled a hole at the top of the 90 deg fitting. Could
not accomplish punching a hole through the filter. Finally bit the
bullet and pulled the tank. Filled it entirely full with water and
dumped it out refilled to the top with water and using my pneumatic die
griinder cut about a 4" square around the pickup tube. Pulled the thing
out and found that I had sealed it with tank slooshing compound. Removed
the screen and reworked the pickup to assure it pulled near the bottom
and welded the pickup back in place. Works fine. Added an in-line filter
at the carbs.
From other comments I've read perhaps I need one before the SU pump?
