As the saying goes "You are not alone".  I do the same and for the same 
reason, except that I choose to use Hylomar between gasket and head for a 
semi-permanent mount yet very effective seal, and wheel bearing grease on the 
top face 
of the gasket for guaranteed non-destructive removal of the valve cover.

Works for me....
