Neal:
It was a short in the tail light wiring caused by a loose tool wearing
the insulation away. Other Listers warned that many of the other wires
into the instrument panel could also be melted and they were right: the
short also fried the OD but not the wipers or panel lights. Following
their advice, I've installed an in-line fuse. I also tied up the boot:
no more loose tools.
