David, et al,
If it IS high fuel pressure, and you have the "correct" fuel pump in use, (in
my case a square body SU), what can be done about the pressure? Does the fuel
pump point gap effect pressure? -and is it worth checking, on a new pump?

  the early cars with out the overflow pipes have a small notch in the cover
  then there is a special washer and cup that goes under the nut. If this is
  not there you will not have a flooding problem you will have a problem of
  running out of gas at higher rpms.
  If you are having a flooding problem look for high float levels or high
fuel
  pressure.
