Yes, there was.

Where you said: down between the two middle spark plugs.  It is an
aluminum tag held by the drive rivets.  Hot tank cleaning of the block
will disolve the tag, leaving just the rivets.  If the PO pulled the
rivets and removed the tag before cleaning, maybe he forgot to put it
back.

With drive rivets.  They are headed rivets with a spiral shank that is
an interference fit in the holes drilled in the block.  They are a
standard hardware item in older hardware stores or you can get some
from Healey specialists like David Nock and probably Healey Surgeons.
