You can try to drill it out, but I would say that your chances of ruining
the good parts are too high.  Wound up driving it out but it got rather
destroyed.  Replace it with the shank of a nail of the appropriate diameter
and cut to length.  Shhhhhhhhhhhh.  Don't tell the concours guys!  :)

I believe you are right.  I guess you could press the piece out of the
rubber, but I don't really know.
