Another Overdrive Question

Hi,

I have made it through the clutch issue 2 weeks ago on my BN7 Mark I.  Thanks 
to all who replied with solutions and problem determination procedures.   The 
clutch, pressure plate and throw out (all new) for a 3000 were installed.  The 
culprit was the clutch...it was put in backwards.  It is not much fun pulling 
out the transmission through the cockpit area.

Now, dealing with the Overdrive Unit.  The solenoid is used and will be replace 
by a new one tonight or tomorrow.  Now that I have a rolling chassis and 
driving it around the neighborhood....confiming to all my neighbors that I am, 
in fact, crazy and obsessed with this restoration, I want to work out the 
Overdrive adjustments.  I know this is a finely tuned device and must be 
correct to operate.

This is what I have so far:
Throttle kick out works well.
New block out switch.
New O/D relay.
Good current going to the solenoid
Have adjusted the lever attached to bottom of solenoid piston rod according to 
the manual by using the outside lever aligned with the hole in the side of the 
O/D

Questions???
Does the car need to reach a certain speed or RPM for the O/D to operate?
What height should the bump be that the solenoid piston rod rests on inside the 
case where the adjustment lever is?
While driving in 3rd, switch to O/D, the outside lever moves up to the 
alignment hole but will not kick into O/D. If I manually push the lever a 
little forward beyond(past) that point (toward the front of the car), it shifts 
in smoothly into O/D.
Will the new solenoid be that much stronger where it may pull the outside lever 
to that point past the adjustment hole where it kicks in and then settle back 
to the adjustment hole?
Or is the adjustment hole the point where the shift is supposed to be 
made...requiring some inside adjustment?
How do I measure the current (amps) required to draw the piston rod up and 
measure the amps that hold into place?  I understand that 20 amps are required 
to pull up the piston and 2 amps hold it into place...otherwise the life of the 
solenoid is greatly reduced or burns up.
