I h experienced a similar problem with one of our race engines a year or so
back.
We noticed fluctuating oil pressure and, after lots of investigation, found
that a newly installed camshaft had started to wear very rapidly on about 4
lobes despite new lifters and special cam lube being used.
The fluctuating pressure was caused by very small flakes of steel, from the
cam, getting lodged around the relief valve piston. These were only found
when the relief valve piston was removed, with difficulty, and the hole was
probed using a magnet on a stick.
Most disconcerting!!

now have excessive oil pressure. 80psi at 3000rpm and 90 psi at 4000rpm. I
have installed a new oil pressure relief piston and spring with no change to
the oil pressure. I have removed the oil sump screen, the relief valve, and
inspected the oil passage on the relief circuit. I don't see any reason why
the relief system isn't working. Any ideas would be welcome.
