If its from a C series gearbox out of a sedan - I probably have one.....
For many years - 'donor' sedan gearboxes were the only way to keep Healeys
on the road. Today - the only thing that keeps most BN1 gearboxes on the
road is the A70 and 4 cyl A90 sedan gearsets.
The trick with sedan geaboxes - whether it be sprites or big healeys - is to
use the entire 'donor sedan' gearset. Don't mix A and B cut gears - or
different ratios - use the whole set.
Eg - in broad terms:
- in a Bugeye Sprite - you can fit the full gearset from a morris minor:
- in a 100/4 - you can fit the entire gearset from an A70 sedan (using your
Healey 1000 mainshaft etc)
Yes - the ratios are different. Truthfully - tell me how many revs you drop
on the change from 3th to 4th with 'whatever' gearset you have today. Can
you tell me? No cheating...
I certainly can't tell you how many revs I drop - and I've got a Denis
Welch SCCR gearset in my BJ8!.
Despite Joe (the "Morris Isis Maurauder") Armour's potential claims to the
contrary - I personally believe that I have the largest privately held
collection of "secondhand, original, unrestored, un-molested,
never-reconditioned - but off the shelf - BMC C series gearboxes"*.
In Australia - the world - or the entire universe.
Many Healey owners are feared in all the BSDCC's**
I'm not 100% sure about part numbers- but AEC3172 was early - (think A90 6
cyl 1955) and later was AEC3267.
But I'd just be guessing - Ask a BSDCC member ........

dead complete cars would 'technically' beat me - but only by a technicality

**British Sedan Donor Car Clubs..... the collective name given to all cars
which Healeys/ Triumphs/ MGs etc were based on - or shared parts with...
have you seen the way Cooper S owners check that their 23D4 Distributor is
still there after a Sprite person looks in their engine bay? - Or the way an
A40 Farina owner lifts his spare wheel to ensure that the Sprite sill
jacking point grommet is still in his boot floor under his spare wheel after
a Sprite owner has looked at it?? :)
PS I also personally believe that I have the worlds' largest privately held
collection of Austin A70 gearboxes - if anyone is interested.
