Does it not turn over at all, or just not catch as it turns over, between
"like the battery is dead" and "with or without the choke out" I was a litte
confused, because if you are getting no action at all the chocke is pretty
much irrelevant.
If no trun over at all, check all the battery connections, between battery
and starter, include the solenoid, and clean off any corrossion, I have had
bad connections/corrosion cause intermittent problems like this.
If it doesn't like to start when hot this is a fairly common problem with
many old British cars. I have found no choke and half to 3/4 throttle works
to get it going after a 10-15 minute stop from full operating temperature on
a hot day, which is when it seems to be the worst.
