Ted,
Check for air leaks around the carbs. I had the same problem many years ago
with my BJ8. I had also tuned the carbs several times, etc. Didn't find
anything until I took the carbs off and found an errent washer that was
between the carb body and the manifold. Once removed everything was
wonderful. Other air leaks could cause the same symptoms.
Pete

I am having chronic problem with back firing through the carbs. This
condition is particularly acute prior to full warm up, but persists at
higher rpm's even after the temp reached 165.

The carbs have been tuned several times since this developed, and the floats
adjusted, but the problem persists.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Ted
