I was in a rush. Yes - you are absolutely correct - you can "select" reverse 
gear irrespective of the overdrive.

I misread the symptoms in my haste - my comments related to a Healey which 
won't MOVE in reverse - rather than a Healey which can't 'select' reverse.

My comments related to when a Healey won't move in reverse - i.e. then the 
issue could be that the overdrive is selected.

If you can't SELECT reverse gear - and have recently had the gearstick out - 
I'd be inclined to have a closer look at any worn mechanical things - like 
the lever bush - misaligned forks - selector rod/fork bolts or gearstick 
mounting plate bolts loose etc.
