I suspect you are right about gas tank crud, there is a small filter 
in the SU fuel pump that isn't to hard to clog, on the inlet side of 
the gas flow I believe.

I etched and coated my tank five years ago with Bill Hirsch products 
and have had no problem since.

The process including tank removal is fairly easy on a BN1.
