Hello Ned

Before you pull the head , start up the engine, with the valve assembly
exposed, and a feeler gauge some 5 to 7 thousand over, check the gap on
the valves on cylinder #1  under normal conditions
-there is an excellent chance that you have a
sticking valve with a slow return  - two possible causes (a.) some foreign
material in the valve guide or (b.) the valve springs may be weak. Using
the feeler gauge to check may just correct the problem if not confirming
it.

If this does not turn out to be the case you've only expended a little extra
time.
