I have an Aluminium tank which is bigger than Std - no wood block and no
rod - and I have a 195 60 15 on a 6in wide rim in my boot. It just sits on
top of the tank, on a towel.
BTW - the critical dimension is the height of the fuel tank at the 'rear' of
the car. My tank slopes 'upwards' towards the front of the car, and is flat
where the sender unit it.

Where is the spare wheel going to go if the block of wood & rod aren't there
anyway? My spare is always still in the boot!!
