The "shield" that you describe is usually called the "outer" of the cable.
If you are sure that the cable is routed correctly you have a bit of a
problem. You are correct in concluding that the choke will not work
correctly.
The "little aluminium tube" that you refer to is actually steel and as you
have noted is designed such that the outer of the cable will slide into it
and keep the cable aligned correctly.
I've run into this problem before and solved it by making up a "ferrule"
especially for the purpose. This was a piece of 1/4" brass rod about 2" long
with a hole drilled down the center large enough for the inner of the cable
to pass through. One end of the ferrule is turned down to about 1/8"
diameter for about 1/2" and this fits into the "little aluminium tube" which
is actually steel. ;-).
The other end of the brass ferrule is drilled out to about 5/32" for a depth
of 1/2" and the outer of the cable fits into this. When this thing is
correctly made it effectively extends the outer of the cable by about 1
1/2".
All this work was designed to "save" an original choke cable assembly
because the reproduction purchased did not have the "twist to lock" action
of the original and the knob looked different.

I recently replaced the choke Pull/knob.
However, the shield that the cable slides within is about 1" too short to
fit in the little aluminium tube that comes through the firewall from the
holder that the two carb choke cables attach too. (is any of this making
sense?).
While the cable itself is long enough, my concern is that if the cable slide
does not slide into the holder, the cable itself will rub against the holder
and wear.
Anybody else have this problem?
