Dear Tim,

I have attached an image of how I installed a 12V socket to power up a
charger or a radar detector. It is all plastic, so it does not make a
difference what the polarity of the car is. Make certain to install a fuse
in the wiring to avoid frying your wiring harness in the event of a short.

I do however recommend that you convert your car to a negative ground. I am
sure that some day you will you will forget about the item you are powering
with the 12V socket has a metal casing that is at the negative potential and
then will touch the gear shift or some other metal part of the car that is
at positive potential, and sparks will fly.

As the list will strip out the image, if anyone wants it, please contact me
off list

Subject: Electricals Question

Hi

I am thinking of fitting a cigar lighter to my BJ8 so I can charge my
mobile
phone, and run a TomTom SatNav off it as well.

My BJ8 has the original wiring set up.

My question is:

for devices that run off a cigar lighter like phone chargers and power
converters for things like SatNav, does it matter whether the car is
positive or
negative earth?

Thanks in advance for all the help I know i will get.
