I had looked at those pictures on several occasions when someone ordered a
used regulator mechanism and, on some occasions, I had shipped what was
shown in the picture. Of course the purchaser immediately shipped it back,
usually with some rather uncomplimentary note...

I see that BJ8 window gear mechanisms are interchangeable driver side to
passenger side except for the coil spring orientation. If one installs
them per the picture in the parts book (or Moss catalog), the spring
assist would help lower the window. I presumed that the illustration is
wrong, so I have the spring assist to help raise the windows.
