My '79 MGB engine caught fire at the end of a long trip from SF Bay
Area to Santa Barbara.
Of course, knowing about British Cars and their tendancy to immolate
themselves, I had a fire extinguisher in the trunk. I pulled it out
and had the fire out in about 5-10 seconds after it started.
The only damage was a couple of non-essential overflow plastic pipes
for the zenith stromberg carbs... once the fire was out I started the
car right away and drove off.
Lesson is... don't think about what you'll have to do if fire destroys
your engine, think more about the $40 you'll spend for the nice fire
extinguisher that will prevent the fire in the first place.
If your engine burns without stopping it, you are looking at a
complete frame up restoration... it is a very serious and horrible
thing to have happen to your car.
