Does it shift any easier if you pump the clutch?  Try that first and
then get back to us.

RE children - if you put a proper child seat in the rear seat, fixed in
with seat belts, I don't see why you can't take the kids for a ride.
Sure it's not as safe as driving in a Volvo station wagon but if you are
just driving around town I think the risks are minimal. Certainly safer
than driving around in a top heavy SUV with no rollover protection if
you ask me.
