There are many reasons for reduced mpg in Healeys: if ones driving is
primarily in stop start traffic consumption is high; if you like to
boot it away from a traffic light or stop sign, or plain show-off
consumption can be high - these represent city driving conditions.
On the engine/carburettor/ignition side of things one could have
installed a hotter camshaft, be using an after-market fuel pump
(above the 2.7 psi recommended for most SU carburettors) and
have faulty timing - all, or any of these will impact on fuel consumption
on in town/city driving and will further be impacted by the
individuals driving style . In my case I have an after-market Sabaru
fuel pump (4+ psi), and a road-rally camshaf,t my BJ8 consumption is 13-15 mpg
(imperial measure) in town. Mixed town and country driving
approximately it is on average 21 mpg; and country/highway driving at 70+ mph
I range between 24 to 29 mpg depending on wind direction and
wind speed.
