How much of a difference is there between the measurement of valves by
adjusting them when they're cold verses hot? I recognize steel will change
its dimension with varying temperatures.

Goodness, we're talking sporty tractor engines here. I can't believe it
makes that much difference. I think I read somewhere, here(?), quite
recently that you get the engine hot and then let it cool down enough so you
can bear to do the job.
I always do it cold as per the BMC manual.
