The method below is spot on. However, I think it worth clarifying the first 
statement " you must place the ammeter in series with the battery". The ammeter 
is in series with the feed to everything except the starter motor itself. If 
one was to wire the ammeter in series with the main feed wire from the battery 
itself, this would blow the ammeter to kingdom come, the first time the engine 
was started.
