Alan,
No, you miss read the post. The oil and filter were changed regularly,
but the fresh oil was not filtered because the faulty adapter let the
oil bypass the filter. My oil pressure is still good like the day after
the rebuild, 67000 miles ago, so I don't think there is any debris to
harm bearings let alone piston rings.

Ken,

I deleted your original message but noted that you had not changed your
oil filter for a very long time. I would say that the oil flter became
clogged with debris which then caused the by-pass valve to open allowing
the debris to flow thoughout the entire engine. If the by-pass didn't
function as it should, there would be little or no oil lubrication in
the engine. Could easily have caused the failure you describe.
