Len-might also check out some stuff called LizardSkin. It is a water-based
ceramic coating that sprays on like truck-bed liners. I got a gallon from
the local hot-rod shop to coat the cockpit and under the bonnet of the RHD
project bugeye I am working on-is purported to better and easier to apply
than mat-type insulation-no personal experience yet, as I haven't driven the
project car (still wiring)but the testimonial at
http://www.lizardskin.com/pages/testimonials4.php sold me. Was easy to
apply on the bare tub of my car-would require careful masking on a finished
car.

Most List discussions on this matter seem lead to Dynamat Xtreme as the
preferred insulation material.
In looking at the Dynamat web site, I find that this product is made with
black butyl based core, .067 (1/16 ?) inches thick, self adhesive, and comes
in 18" X 32" sheets - $40 for one sheet and $270 for nine sheets.
The following are possible substitutes that appear to be a similar product:
J.C.Whitney has the following:

of natural fibers-no fiberglass to irritate skin. 3/8" thick underpadding is

underfoot-won't bunch up or bottom out. Can be trimmed easily with scissors
to any size or shape. Fire retardant-carries Class A fire rating and

And - based upon some scraps I had left over after insulating my tunnel, I
found that a product is also available at places like Home Depot and can be
found as a wrap for heating/ac ducting. I have lost my notes but as I
recall it is a self adhesive, foil backed black foam, 1/6" thick, and I
think comes 24" wide. I do not recall the length or cost but I am sure is
far less expensive than that name brand. I put two layers inside the tunnel
and secured it further with fender washers and bolts as suggested by someone
on The List not too long ago.
Back in the '70s, when I was new to the Healey world, I glued a bunch of
Pink Panther house insulation in there. I am convinced to this day that
that was the most effective head blocker of all the other products that I
have used.
