There are bulbs that are not polarized. Here:

And I have seen others. However care needs to be exercised if you
don't know!
Hooked up backwards they may be very bright for a few milliseconds.
Making the bulbs non polarized is actually pretty simple with a couple
of steering
diodes. But the extra diodes cost a few cents and will be be necessary
in very few
instances so they save the cost.
Leds are getting quite bright. That's what is in use on the police
cruisers nowadays.
