I once was told that long ago, the lights on British cars did not have high
and low beams, but were adjusted so that the near side was aimed farther down
the road, and when the lights were "dipped", that light went out, and the
light on the wing showed where the edge of the car was.

I also have heard that the side lamps came on when the brake lights came on,
so as to alert pedestrians you were stopping for them.

Maybe, maybe not.
