If they should be black, then the pictures in the Restoration Guide of
Anderson/Moment do not show it correctly. As far as I can see there, even
pictures are black & white, these plates are body colour on the cars shown in
the book. I want to believe you, but these pictures show it differently.

They should be black. The usually get paint body color when cars are
repainted...

Not so, at least on Hundreds and I don't know why later Healeys would be
different. The plates are black.
Consider: The steering column is black. It was fitted after the chassis was
painted. The plates were attached after the steering column was installed.
The basic principle that Rich Chrysler has offered is that everything that
was
not on the chassis as delivered to the factory for assembly was black (except
for the engine, which has its own color and some of the transmissions which
were either not painted or were engine color. )
