Subject: [Healeys] wiper motor short?

I've recently reinstalled a Lucas wiper motor that was out of the car for a
long time and bench tested OK when connecting the terminals directly to a
battery. Now that the wiper motor is back in the car there is apparently
something wrong inside the motor because now there is a direct short within
the overall electrical system. A check with an ohmeter shows continuity
between all terminals(and the case) on the wiper motor. If the wires are
disconnected from the wiper motor the rest of the electrical system goes back
to normal. If + and - is connected directly to the motor from a separate
battery the motor works fine. This seems to me like an internal short in the
wiper motor but if so, how can the motor work normally when outside power is
fed to it. Anyone have any ideas?
