I had the same problem last year and while it didn't let the smoke out, the
aroma wasn't all that pleasant.

New regulators are not expensive. AH Spares have them for BN1-BJ7 and BJ8
for just 21.95 Pounds.

On my recent road trip my battery dumped acid into the boot.  Looks like the
regulator is overcharging--getting almost 
16V @ 1,800RPM (damn Lucas electrics, only got 180K miles on it).

Looks like there's an adjustment procedure in the manual, anyone had luck
with that, or is it replacement time?
