That IS the point. AFAIA it started with RR who would paint bolts etc
with yellow paint of a particular colour so that they could tell if it
had been tampered with because that colour was only available to them
and their authorised dealers/engineers.

The plastic on one hand started in a similar way and became a way of
hiding the now much higher voltage electrics from people who might put
their hands in. Of course the idea of restricting access also protected
the position of the main dealers.
